Does Sheetrock Burn? The Short Answer
Sheetrock does not burn the way wood or paper does. Its gypsum core resists flame and will not ignite under normal household fire conditions.
The paper facing on each side can char and scorch. That layer is combustible, but it does not fuel a fire the way framing or furniture will.
So sheetrock is fire resistant, not fireproof. It slows a fire and buys time, yet extreme or prolonged heat will eventually break it down.

Why the Gypsum Core Resists Fire
Sheetrock is made of a gypsum core pressed between two paper faces. Gypsum is calcium sulfate that holds water locked inside its crystal structure.
That bound water is the key. Roughly one fifth of the core’s weight is water chemically trapped in the mineral.
When fire hits, heat drives that water out as steam in a process called calcination. Releasing steam absorbs energy and keeps the surface cooler than the flames around it.
This reaction is why a sheet of gypsum board can hold a fire back for a set number of minutes while people get out safely.
What Happens to Sheetrock During a Fire
The stages are predictable. First, the paper face chars and darkens as surface heat climbs.
Next, the core begins to calcine and release steam. The board stays intact and slows heat from reaching the framing behind it.
Once the water is gone, the gypsum turns brittle and powdery. At that point the weakened board can crack, crumble, and finally fail.
Standard sheetrock also warps and needs full replacement after real fire exposure. You cannot patch over calcined board and expect it to perform again.
Standard Sheetrock vs Type X Fire Rated Board
Not all sheetrock offers the same protection. Standard 1/2 inch board gives limited resistance, often around thirty minutes.
Type X sheetrock is different. It is usually 5/8 inch thick and packed with glass fibers that hold the core together longer as it calcines.
That upgrade earns Type X a one hour fire rating on tested wall assemblies. Type C goes further still for demanding commercial uses.
For a wall to reach its rated time, the whole assembly matters, including proper drywall installation and sealed joints. A rated board installed poorly will not perform as designed.
Where Colorado Code Requires Fire Rated Sheetrock
Building codes call for fire rated board in specific high risk spots. Attached garages are the most common example in Denver and Aurora homes.
The wall and ceiling between a garage and living space typically require Type X. Furnace rooms, shared walls in multi family buildings, and some stairwells also demand rated assemblies.
Skimping here is not worth it. Correct board and clean drywall finishing keep these barriers sealed and ready to do their job.
Sheetrock, Smoke, and Everyday Safety
Even standard sheetrock helps in a house fire. Because the core will not readily burn, it does not add much fuel and it slows how fast flames spread across walls.
